WHAT IS AN E-CIGARETTE?

One thing you’ll quickly notice is the number of e-cigarettes and vape pods to choose from, so it can feel like a minefield at first. How much you want or need to understand whether electric cigarettes should influence your choice, and if the short answer is that this section seems to get complicated, you probably need a vape pod. Each type of e-cigarette comes with its own pros and cons. Remember that there is no style that suits everyone when it comes to vaping. Usually they are divided into two categories, pod e-cigarettes and refillable e-cigarettes.

Vape Pod system

Pod e-cigarettes, just as the name suggests, are an ecigg that has a pod or cartridge, not a tank. They are usually “pen-shaped” and consist of just two parts: a rechargeable battery and a tank or pod that clicks into the battery. Aimed at new vapers or smokers who want to switch to vaping, they are designed to be easy to use and exceptionally easy to maintain. Some vape pods have buttons, but most are automatic, meaning you just inhale them like a cigarette to get steam. Most of them are compact, discreet and designed to mimic the feeling of smoking.

Pre-filled Vape Pods

Pre-filled capsules are delivered full of e-liquid, making them the easiest possible devices to use. Anything that is expendable or may need to be replaced is included in the pod, and when it is empty, simply discard the pod and insert a new one.

Refillable Vape Pods

Refillable pods are delivered empty, so you can fill them with your choice of e-liquid. They can be refilled about 10 times before they stop producing steam, then just fill up a new capsule and click into it. This means they’re not as easy to use as pre-filled capsules, but operating costs are lower.

Refillable e-cigarettes

The traditional, refillable type of e-cigarette is probably what you’re used to seeing people use. They consist of a battery, a tank that is refilled with e-liquid and a coil. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes from a smaller pen style to a large box. Most of these e-cigarettes will have a button to press to vape and many have settings that can be adjusted. They are then filled with whatever strength and taste of vape juice you choose. These e-cigarettes are not only aimed at new vapers, although some will be designed with them in mind and are usually referred to as starter kits.

WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE VAPE JUICES MADE FROM?

Vape Juice traditionally contains four ingredients; aroma, two diluents and nicotine. Nicotine is optional.

1. Propylene glycol (PG) – PG is one of two diluents used in e-juice.
2. Vegetable glycerin (VG) – VG is the second of the two diluents.
3. Flavouring – This one is as simple as it seems. The flavoring gives the flavor that you taste when you crank your vape juice. A vape juice may contain one or more aromas.
4. Nicotine – Although the majority of e-liquids contain nicotine, it is optional and there are a lot of zero nicotine e-liquids available. This is the part that your body craves when you stop smoking.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PG & VG VAPE JUICES?

As mentioned earlier, there are two diluents in vape juice. These are PG and VG and both perform different functions. Vape juices have different conditions of these two diluents. So on a vape juice mix you can see something like this;

PG/VG: 50/50

This refers to the dilution ratio of vape juice. The example above means that both have the same ratio in the vape juice. But why is this important? Well that’s because depending on which diluent is in a higher concentration, the vape experience changes.

Propylene glycol (PG) Juicer

PG performs some functions. It carries the flavoring in the vape juice and is responsible for the “throat hit” part of the vaping experience. If a vape juice has a higher percentage of PG then when you vape it, you get more throat hit and a more intense taste experience.

Vegetable Glycerin (VG) Juicer

VG also performs some functions. It is responsible for the steam production part of the vape juice, as well as some sweetness and thickness. So vape juices that have a higher concentration of VG are much thicker, produce more vapor clouds and are a little sweeter overall.
